the summer issue of

weddings unveiled

is out this month

and i’m very grateful some of my work is in it.

the vision for this effort was

a couple eloping under the peach blossoms of central virginia.

the papers were to create a sense of intimacy of the day and a warmth of inviting guests

to a following celebration … a handkerchief was included with each invitation so that something the couple held on their wedding day

would be passed to the people who loved them most.

the idea and shoot brought together a collaboration of

some intensely gifted people in charlottesville.

to be included was such an honor for me.

what made it all even more incredible, though, was that

these were my friends.

old and new.

there was one moment when a group of us were gathered together

‘blocking the light’

… creating a full shadow so the sun wouldn’t be too bright on some of the papers …

jen fariello

was telling us how to get closer together or shift as a group.

during those few minutes, i hope it’s alright to share i had an ‘eternal instant.’

have you ever heard of that before?

my husband and i read this phrase in a book once.

and we call on it from time to time to describe what most often just can’t be described.

an eternal instant, as we understand it, is a moment that can be as fleeting as a split second,

but it stays with you.

and there i was

basically hugging people i love

and my work was being photographed.

before the news of this lovely magazine or even seeing the gorgeous pictures here,

i was as thankful then as i am tonight

in getting to share them with you.

are you ready to be inspired?

because i’ve read about two people this past month

who amaze me

and it just feels right to pass them along.

first, meet markus scheer.

he is a 7th generation shoemaker in vienna.

‘the oldest bespoke shoemaker in europe’

the wall street journal magazine says.

here is his workshop.

wow.

the candles beside the water filled glass orbs on the table …

they are called ‘schusterlampes.’

aren’t they beautiful?

you can read the whole article here.

the things that impressed me most about the man and the work he does are

the history of it all

the intense quality (they say shoes from here fit like socks)

the beauty of his environment

and that his goals for the future respect the legacy of generations past.

i hope you’ll read about him.

and now meet maggie austin.

she designs cakes aspiring to be ‘haute couture.’

and they are. they really are.

look at these images.

it is hard not to add so many more pictures from her website.

please go swim around there.

a friend met her recently and described everything about her as

exuding her aesthetic.

and that she was humble and kind.

it makes them more beautiful to look at, knowing that, doesn’t it?

her website says the Old Town Alexandria Victorian

where she works

is ‘sun-drenched’ and ‘an ideal environment for artistic exploration.’

like mr. scheer, her work is about

quality

the elegance of her workspace

details

making something that no one else can make the way she does.

so…

these two people are doing what i really believe

they are made to do.

that is awesome.

to find what you are made to do.

and then to do it in a gorgeous environment.

and on top of it all to be kind and engaging and visionary.

it’s inspiring, right?

thanks so much for witnessing it with me.

boston public garden

it is my favorite kind of day in charlottesville.

absolutely cloudy

not one chance of sun.

raining off and on

the kind of day that makes you want to

read books

and watch movies

and cuddle.

and not go anywhere.

but today is different,

and it doesn’t seem as special.

because today a lot of people are scared.

and aren’t allowed to go anywhere.

holding you close, boston.

one of my babies turned 4 yesterday so i thought i’d

write about him.

he has had a big week … for a world of reasons.

i took this picture recently

and it totally suits him.

he is brave.

and kind and wild and smart.

i think this description fits so many children,

but his own mix makes him ours.

and now he is four!!

time goes by so fast.

just to share, the decal above his headboard is from

shanna murray … her blog states she is an ‘artist and optimist.’

how cool is that?

i don’t know her, but i wish i did.

and we found the giraffe lamp somewhere online ages ago,

though i just saw it in the petit bebe window the other day …

along with so many lovely things.

i figure i can share where to get the stuff in the picture,

but there’s only one of my boy!

i’m so grateful he belongs to me.

around my house we are getting ready for easter tomorrow.

this part of ‘we’ is preparing food and baskets

and hopefully keeping perspective about what is most important this weekend.

while making lists of what needs to happen the next 24 hours,

i thought i would share a fun list with you

on what i would want from the easter bunny …

these are muji pens. i first learned of them here in charlottesville.

at o’suzannah.

(it’s never a surprise to find something you love in there!)

are they not beautiful? and they write like a dream.

fabriano notebooks are at the art box here in charlottesville.

amanda is just so great and can hook you up!

they’ve probably been around forever, but i just found them the other day …

you can choose different types of pages, but  the dotted grid pages are my favorite.

and moleskin notebooks. i don’t think my list … or yours …. would be complete without them.

with love and hope this easter.

we’ve had some gorgeous winter weather in charlottesville. and even though

it’s supposed to be spring,

i really do love the snowfall and last taste of winter.

fires and all.

with the cold, i’m hoping y’all have had a lot of coffee on hand like we have …

the neutral colors of white snow and creamy coffee got me thinking about a

project i did a long time ago …

this envelope was one that was left over, not yet with an address.

i placed these vintage stamps on it,

just because it was a good snowy day for reading.

and a friendly reminder: it is 46 cents to mail a letter these days.

as much as i love mailing things, i always forget.

ever since i saw this picture the other day, it has stayed with me.

it made me think about restorative time, and a quote that resonates so much with me:

collect moments, not things.

and then a friend sent an article in the times that was awesome. please read it.

to sum, a man had so much in terms of monetary wealth and physical possessions …

and when he massively simplified his environment, he became deeply content.

he finishes the article stating,

‘my space is small. my life is big.’

wonderful.

so what does this have to do with stationery?

everything.

life is about moments, and i believe paper is a way to marry something we hold with something we feel.

a way to create a moment. whether by note or invitation or place card or the list could go on.

so i thought i could encourage everyone tonight to send a note sometime soon and, in turn,

actually to give a moment to someone else…

to tell them that they are loved, thought of, appreciated, missed …

i’ll do it, too.

and while talking about moments, it was about this time exactly 13 years ago tonight that

my husband proposed. lucky me.

happy st. patrick’s day, everyone.

all my love…

this is one of the most beautiful things i have seen in a while.

andy yang is a multi-disciplinary artist who works with visual and sound. working on

his brand, he painted on each one of his papers. name cards, letterhead, envelopes.

the whole process was recorded so he could make what he calls ‘live’ soundscapes.

it’s captivating.

you can find him here.

all this makes me think about a recent exhibition by clay witt

at second street gallery here in charlottesville.

during february, clay spent three weeks actually in the gallery creating his art.

i’m not sure the word art describes

the elegance and intricacy

of what he does well enough, but i’ll go with it.

the point of mentioning both of these artists tonight is that they

have encouraged people to watch them do what they do.

i think that matters.
